Casa Shalom was originally founded in 1986 to care for orphans of a civil war in Guatemala. The government-run orphanages are overcrowded and loosely governed. These children are victims of neglect, mental and sexual abuse, or simply abandoned. Some of them were literally found, naked on the side of the road. Many of those children continue to be abused by the workers, or are allowed to be abused by local gangs in an effort to keep peace from the outside. Casa Shalom is completely self-funded and exists to give these children a safe alternative to a government facility. Right now, Casa Shalom can house about 120 children. The vision is to double that. Casa Shalom not only provides for the most basic needs for the children, but is a place of hope, healing and acceptance that shows Christ’s Love to each child who enters the doors.
